Checklist for SEN Families
Stay ready, stay strong – because your child’s care deserves nothing less.
When you’re a parent to a child with additional needs, emergencies don’t knock – they arrive uninvited. Whether it’s seizures, chest infections, pneumonia, prolonged coughs, surgery, or intensive medical procedures like Botox treatments or audiology exams, having a hospital go-bag ready saves time, panic, and most importantly, helps you stay focused on what matters most: your child.
Here’s a complete checklist curated from real-life experience – one that’s supported us through four years of urgent care, emergency stays, and brave recoveries.
👶 For Your Child:
- ✔ Spare clothing for the day – Blood tests, vomits, or spills happen often.
- ✔ Overnight clothing – Comfy PJs or cotton sets for those unplanned overnight stays.
- ✔ Underwear or nappies – As per age and need.
- ✔ Socks + both indoor & outdoor shoes – Comfort + mobility = confidence.
- ✔ Favourite cuddle toy or sensory toy – Their comfort in a strange environment.
- ✔ Lightweight blanket – Helps them feel at home (or use hospital ones if too many procedures expected).
- ✔ Sleeping aid – White noise machine or lullaby player to calm the night chaos.
- ✔ Feeding items – Bibs, bottles, utensils, or sippy cups. Familiarity helps!
- ✔ Medications (regular + PRN) – Always keep a list and keep dosages updated.
- ✔ Mini vanity pouch – Store small accessories, bangles, or sensory items in one spot.
👩👧 For You (The Parent/Caregiver):
- ✔ Spare outfit – For you and your child (yes, you’ll need one too!).
- ✔ Toiletries – Toothbrush, face wash, wipes, deodorant, etc.
- ✔ Comfy slippers or shoes – Hospital floors = long walks.
- ✔ Carry-all bag – Big enough to hold everything, light enough to carry at 2 AM.
📚 For Engagement & Comfort:
- ✔ Activity books & stickers – Hospital rooms can be restricting. Keep minds busy.
- ✔ iPad/tablet – For games, cartoons, and gentle visual engagement. (Use sparingly!)
- ✔ Snacks & small meals – Pack favourite snacks, fruits, and hydration options.
- ✔ Day/night care creams – Skin can dry out in hospital settings.
- ✔ Antiseptic creams – Always handy for minor scrapes or IV areas.
💡 Bonus Tips from Our Family:
- Get familiar with your hospital’s playroom or play specialist – Many pediatric wards have them. They are a lifesaver.
- Encourage gentle interaction – Roam around, explore ward areas (if allowed), and connect with other kids.
- Keep your essentials in reach – Have a small separate pouch for items like documents, charger, and ID.
Stay Prepared, Not Panicked
You never know when the next emergency might land you back in the hospital – but you can control how prepared you are. Pack with confidence, know your essentials, and remember: you’ve done this before, you can do it again.
Your strength is what your child looks up to. Let your go-bag reflect that same strength. 💼💖
